Herringbone vs chevron parquet flooring

One of the most frequently asked questions we get in our showroom is, “What is the difference between Herringbone and Chevron parquet flooring?” On this page, we will explain the main differences between these two popular choices of hardwood flooring, while helping you make the right decision for your home.

HERRINGBONE

A pattern often confused with chevron, herringbone is created by placing rectangles in a staggered zigzag pattern as shown above.

CHEVRON

Chevron, also known as Hungarian Point, is a zigzag pattern, and where the parquet pieces join, a sharp point is created as shown above.

Why choose hardwood floors anyway?

There are indeed plenty of different hardwood flooring options to choose from, and making the right choice for your home can sometimes feel daunting. There are also many who think hardwood flooring is an expensive option; however, all things considered, it is the best possible choice in having a space within your home that is beautiful, long lasting, safe and clean.

Consider for a moment the overall life of a hardwood floor and soon enough you’ll see that the benefits of wood flooring far outweigh the initial costs. After all, your home is your sanctuary and when it comes to choosing the most appropriate hardwood flooring designs, you want to ensure that your house looks impeccable. Therefore, making the right decision between Chevron and Herringbone flooring, will make all the difference in the world.

In order to make the right decision, it’s best to start studying the room or rooms you want to put hardwood flooring in. This is where the decisive role comes into play. The floors and the walls will determine the successful outcome and appearance. Once you successfully analyze the room, make sure that there is a balance - even the worst shaped house can be altered into a friendly, warm and cozy home where you are extremely proud to show it off to friends and family.

The difference:

Chevron

Chevron, also known as Hungarian Point, is a zigzag pattern and where the parquet pieces join, a sharp point is created. Visualize the letter “V” on repeat. For chevron floors the wood pieces are cut at an angle and fitted together to form a true point, as seen in the image. This angle is what identifies chevron floors.

Herringbone

A pattern often confused with chevron, herringbone is created by placing rectangles in a staggered zigzag pattern, as shown in the image. For herringbone floors the wood is not cut at an angle, but in rectangles that are laid in a broken zigzag pattern. If you look closely, you can see that the pieces of flooring here do not come to a sharp point, as in the chevron floor.

Choosing between Herringbone and Chevron flooring

Depending on which hardwood pattern you like, regardless if its chevron or herringbone, please remember the design of your floor will impact the size of the room. Basically, some patterns will enlarge the area considerably, while others might make it appear much smaller.

Although chevron and herringbone are very similar in some respects; and to some people, may even look the same, consider the following. Choose chevron over herringbone if you like perfect dimensional resistance and are looking for a floor with a very unique feature. The arrangement of the boards in the shape of a “V”, make any room appear more spacious through an optical view.

However, both chevron flooring and herringbone have a rich history associated with sophistication, making a bold statement in design and even providing a luxurious look. So, as you can see, both are a great choice. But the final choice will depend on your pattern preference and the overall layout of the room or rooms you wish to put hardwood flooring in.

For example, herringbone won’t make the rooms appear more spacious but in terms of style, herringbone is known for being luxurious and incredibly appealing. It certainly gives your home a warm and calming feeling that you will adore. Besides the look and feel, herringbone also lasts longer because it offers less expansion of the planks.
